NFP Health and Safety scholarship

IoD is funding places for 10 not-for-profit directors to attend two IoD health and safety courses.

You will be an experienced trustee on a not-for-profit board and looking to take your H&S governance skills and capability to the next level.

All applicants should meet the following criteria at the time of applying:

  • Have fewer than five years of governance experience
  • Have a sound understanding of the Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice
  • Be on a not-for-profit board (this should be your main governance role)
  • Be a member of the Institute of Directors NZ
  • Be available to travel to attend the course (if choosing the advanced health and safety in-person option) before the end of 2026. The next scheduled advanced health and safety governance in-person course is 17 October in Wellington. The 2026 course dates are 27 March in Christchurch, 15 May in Auckland and 10 October in Wellington.

Eligibility and terms and conditions

The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible to apply.

  • You have the right to remain in New Zealand to work and study for a period of at least five years
  • You do not have experience on a private family, commercial, large company, public sector or NZX-listed board
  • You are not currently participating in the IoD Emerging Directors, Mentoring for Diversity, Future Directors® programme on a host board · You have read and understood the application above criteria and terms and conditions.

Your governance CV, including:

  • Your governance and executive experience
  • Your record of education and training

Your cover letter describing (preferably in the order outlined below):

A written submission addressing the following two subjects (no more than 300 words per subject)

1. What motivates you to serve on a board in the not-for-profit sector?

2. In what way do you feel attending a health and safety course will assist with building your governance capability?
